Industrial producer prices rose by 0.6 percent in both the 19-member euro area and the 28-member European Union (EU) in May compared with the previous month, official figures indicated on Monday.

However, on an annual basis, industrial producer prices decreased by 3.9 percent in the euro area and by 3.7 percent in the EU, according to estimates released Monday by Eurostat, the EU' s statistical office.

This increase in the euro area is due to rises of 1.7 percent in the energy sector, of 0.3 percent for intermediate goods and of 0.1 percent for non-durable consumer goods. Prices remained stable for both capital goods and durable consumer goods.

In the EU bloc, industrial producer prices increased due to rises of 2.1 percent in the energy sector, and of 0.3 percent for intermediate goods, and of 0.1 percent for non-durable consumer goods, while prices remained stable for both capital goods and durable consumer goods.

Eurostat said prices in total industry excluding energy increased by 0.2 percent in both zones.
