France's consumer prices index CPI, the country's main inflation gauge, was up by 0.6 percent in 2016, from a year earlier on soaring energy and food costs, official data showed on Tuesday.
In its first estimate, the national statistics institute, Insee, said last year's prices surge, the highest since 2014 was due "to a more pronounced increase in energy and food prices" which stood at 4.3 percent and 0.7 percent respectively.
On monthly basis, the CPI grew by 0.3 percent in December 2016 after it had reported stable performance in the two previous months, according to the report.
Final data on France's 2016 inflation will be released on Jan. 12.
