German factory orders increased strongly in December 2016 thanks to domestic demand and foreign demand from the euro zone, official data showed on Monday.

New orders increased by 5.2 percent in December from the previous month, according to the German federal statistics office Destatis.

In December, domestic orders rose by 6.7 percent, while foreign orders increased by 3.9 percent.

New orders from the euro zone jumped 10 percent, while new orders from other countries stagnated.

In addition, the price-adjusted turnover in manufacturing in December was down by 2.9 percent on the previous month after seasonal and working-day adjustment.

"The trend of orders continues to be upward," said the German Economy Ministry in a statement.
