Portugal issued 1.25 billion euros (1.33 billion U.S. dollars) in six and 12-month treasury bills on Wednesday.

The Portuguese Treasury and Debt Management Agency (IGCP) sold 1 billion euros in 12-month bills with an average yield of minus 0.112 percent. The six-month bills, of which the debt agency sold 250 million euros, saw a yield of minus 0.158 percent.

Demand was almost double the offer for the 12-month bills, while demand for six-month bills was almost four times.

The IGCP was offering up to 1.5 billion euros in total at the debt sale. Fillipa Silva, from Portugal's Banco Carregosa, told local media that the interest rate seen on Wednesday was in line with short-term market interest rates, which have reached historic lows.

He also said Portugal continued to benefit from a low-interest rate environment and the absence of any signs that the rise of interest rates on behalf of the European Central Bank would happen any time soon.
