Spain's trade deficit rises 31.3 pct in January

Spain's trade deficit rose by 31.3 percent in January to 3.13 billion euros (3.38 billion U.S. dollars) when compared with the same month of a year earlier, the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness said on Tuesday.

Exports rose by 17.4 percent in January year-on-year to 21.44 billion euros, setting a record high for the month. On the other hand, imports increased by 19 percent to 24.57 billion euros.

Exports to European Union countries accounted for 67.8 percent of the total, rising by 15.3 percent in January year-on-year.

Exports to third countries accounted for 32.2 percent of the total and rose by 21.9 percent in January year-on-year.

Those sent to Asian countries excluding Middle East rose by 35.9 percent, exports to Latin America rose by 12.3 percent and those shipped to North America increased by 20 percent. (1 euro=1.08 U.S. dollars)
