The Vietnamese prime minister has approved the Transport Ministry's final plan to start building a 1,372-km North-South expressway before 2020, at total investment of 13.8 billion U.S. dollars, local media reported on Friday.

The expressway will go through 20 cities and provinces nationwide, and be open for use after 2025, online newspaper VnExpress quoted the Government Office's document as reporting.

In the project's first phase, over 243 trillion Vietnamese dong (nearly 10.8 billion U.S. dollars) will be spent on constructing 713 km of the expressway by 2020, and another 659 km by 2022.

In the second phase, more than 69.1 trillion Vietnamese dong (roughly 3 billion U.S. dollars) will be earmarked for expanding and completing the expressway.

The expressway will connect socioeconomic development centers running from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, linking up industrial parks, economic zones and seaports, and reduce transport pressure on the national road No. 1.
