Ireland's jobless rate stood at 6.1 percent in August, the lowest since 2008, according to official figures on Friday.

The figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed employment remains broad-based in the country, with an increase in 11 of the 14 sectors recorded by the CSO.

The increase was also well balanced across the regions, according to the CSO figures.

The CSO said that in the second quarter full-time employment rose by 5 percent from the same period last year.

Ireland has now seen 19 consecutive quarters of employment growth, with the result that the level of employment is now at its highest since 2008, it said.

Ireland has the lowest rate of unemployment in the European Union (EU) for those under the age of 25, according recent data from the European Commission, the EU's executive arm.

The Irish unemployment rate rose to 15.1 percent in February 2012, the highest level since the economic crash in 2008.
