U.S. non-manufacturing activity expanded at a faster pace in September, signaling robust growth of the economy in the month.

The Non-Manufacturing Index (NMI), which measures activity in the U.S. service sector, registered 59.8 in September, up 4.5 points from August's reading of 55.3 and hitting 12-year high, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said in its monthly survey on Wednesday.

The NMI survey covers all sectors outside of manufacturing. A reading above 50 percent indicates expansion of the service sector.

The business activity index went up 3.8 points to 61.3; the new orders component of the index, a signal of future business, rose 5.9 points to 63; and the employment index also increased 0.6 point to 56.8.

Of the 18 industries tracked by the NMI, 15 industries reported growth. The non-manufacturing sector has reflected strong growth in the month of September despite the impact on the supply chain from the recent hurricanes, said the ISM in the report.

According to the report, companies surveyed expected good outlook for business conditions in the future.
A separate ISM report showed that U.S. manufacturing activity in September expands at the fastest pace since May 2004, giving support to the economic growth in the third quarter of this year.
