The Republic of Korea's (ROK) government planned to inject 1.01 trillion won (some 900 million U.S. dollars) into basic science research next year to foster research capability in the sector, the science and technology ministry said Monday.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the government will inject 813 billion won in individual research and 198.8 billion won in group research in the basic science sector. The total amount was up 129.7 billion won from this year.
Support for promising researchers will be increased sharply to 190 billion won next year, up 28.3 percent from this year. Promising researchers are required to be those under the age of 39 who have won a doctorate degree within the past seven years.

The ministry aimed to more than double the research budget to 2.52 trillion won by 2022.

Next year's budget for the basic science sector can be revised after the parliamentary audit later this year.
