South Korea's export posted a double-digit growth in the Sept. 1-10 period due mainly to strong demand for locally-made semiconductors and oil products, customs office data showed Tuesday.

Export, which accounts for about half of the export-driven economy, reached 14 billion U.S. dollars for the first 10 days of this month, up 13.8 percent from the same period of last year, according to the Korea Customs Service.

The daily export averaged 2 billion dollars in the period, up 13.8 percent from a year earlier.

The double-digit increase was attributed to solid demand for locally-made chips and oil products, of which exports jumped 37.8 percent and 41.1 percent, respectively.

Automobile export advanced 23.5 percent, but those for ships and telecommunications devices, such as smartphone, logged a double-digit decline.

Export to China, South Korea's biggest trading partner, jumped 25.2 percent in the cited period, with those to Japan gaining 28.3 percent. Shipments to the United States and Vietnam slightly fell in the period.

Import advanced 12.3 percent to 13.6 billion dollars in the same period, sending the trade surplus to 380 million dollars.
