U.S. retail and food services sales for October stood at 511.5 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 0.8 percent from the previous month, and up 4.6 percent from October last year, the Commerce Department said on Thursday.

The estimates were adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, the report said.

The September data was revised down to show retail sales slipping 0.1 percent instead of edging up 0.1 percent as previously reported.

New cars and auto parts sales were up 1.1 percent from the previous month, and gasoline stations saw a 3.5 percent spike. Overall retail sales grew at a much more modest 0.3 percent from the previous month if these two parts are excluded.

Total sales for the August 2018 through October 2018 period were up 5.0 percent from the same period a year ago, the report said. Enditem
