S.Korea's intellectual property deficit grows in H1

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's intellectual property rights deficit grew in the first half on a one-off factor, central bank data showed Friday.

The intellectual property trade balance recorded a deficit of 880 million U.S. dollars in the January-June period, up from a deficit of 530 million U.S. dollars a year earlier, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

Some of local companies paid settlement money to foreign firms after ending patent dispute in the first half, leading to the increased deficit in the intellectual property balance.

The industrial property rights balance posted a deficit of 1.43 billion U.S. dollars in the first half, up from a deficit of 970 million U.S. dollars a year ago.

The copyright balance was a surplus of 740 million U.S. dollars in the first half, up from a surplus of 690 million U.S. dollars.

By industry, the manufacturing sector logged a deficit of 910 million U.S. dollars in the intellectual property balance in the first half, while services companies recorded a surplus of 70 million U.S. dollars.

The deficit with the United States was the biggest at 2.23 billion U.S. dollars, followed by the deficit with Japan at 490 million U.S. dollars and the one with Britain at 250 million U.S. dollars.
