Canada's October wholesale sales fall 1.1 pct

OTTAWA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Canada's wholesale sales fell 1.1 percent to 64.2 billion Canadian dollars (about 48.8 billion U.S. dollars) in October, the second decrease in five months, Statistics Canada said on Thursday.

Four of the seven subsectors reported lower sales, accounting for 66 percent of total wholesale sales.

The machinery, equipment and supplies sub-sector led the decline in October as sales dropped 3.0 percent to 13.4 billion Canadian dollars. On a year-to-date basis, sales in this subsector were 4.7 percent higher in the first 10 months compared with the same period in 2018. While all four industries within this subsector recorded lower sales in October.

The sales in the miscellaneous sub-sector dropped 3.4 percent to 8.1 billion Canadian dollars primarily as a result of lower sales in the agricultural supplies industry which saw a fall of 8.2 percent to 2.2 billion Canadian dollars.

Wholesale inventories lost 0.5 percent to 91.6 billion Canadian dollars in October, the third consecutive monthly decline.
