HANOI, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam made export turnovers of 19 billion U.S. dollars in the first month of this year, down 14.3 percent against the same period last year, while seeing import turnovers of 19.1 billion U.S. dollars, down 11.3 percent, according to its General Statistics Office on Thursday.
Specifically, Vietnam earned 2.6 billion U.S. dollars from exporting electronic goods, computers and components, up 5.6 percent; reaping 1 billion U.S. dollars from wood and wood products, 1.4 percent; 2.6 billion U.S. dollars from textile, down 21 percent; and another 2.6 billion U.S. dollars from phones and components, 22.4 percent.
In January, the United States remained Vietnam's biggest importer with turnovers of 4.8 billion U.S. dollars, tailed by China with 3.7 billion U.S. dollars and the European Union with 2.6 billion U.S. dollars, according to the office.
In the same period, Vietnam spent 3.7 billion U.S. dollars on importing electronic goods, computers and components, down 8.5 percent; 1.1 billion U.S. dollars on phones and components, down 9.5 percent; 950 million U.S. dollars on cloth, down 18.1 percent.
Meanwhile, China was Vietnam's largest exporter in the first month of 2020 with turnovers of 6.2 billion U.S. dollars, followed by South Korea with 3.2 billion U.S. dollars, and the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) with 2.4 billion U.S. dollars, the office said.
In 2019, Vietnam reaped record trade turnovers of 516.96 billion U.S. dollars with export turnovers of 263.45 billion U.S. dollars, up 8.1 percent against 2018 and import turnovers of 253.51 billion U.S. dollars, up 7 percent, posting a trade surplus of 9.94 billion U.S. dollars, according to the office.
