WELLINGTON, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- New Zealanders are living longer, statistics showed on Wednesday.
According to figures released by New Zealand statistics department Stats NZ, the median lifespan of New Zealand population who passed away in 2019 was about 13 years longer than for those who died 70 years ago.
"Even in the past 20 years, the median lifespans for both men and women in New Zealand have increased by a couple of years," Stats NZ Population Indicators Manager Tehseen Islam said.
In 2019, the median lifespans were 80.5 years for all New Zealand population, up from 77 in 1999 and 68 in 1949. The median lifespans were 78 years for males, up from 75 in 1999 and 67 in 1949; and 83 years for females, up from 81 in 1999 and 69 in 1949.
Median lifespan is defined as median age at death, with half of the people who died are younger and half are older than this age. The figure is affected by different age compositions over time and between areas.
Data released by Stats NZ also shows that New Zealand life expectancy at birth is 80.0 years for males, and 83.5 years for females.
