The consumer price index (CPI) of Vietnam, which measures changes in the prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services, rose 5.91 percent on-year in the past two-month period, the country's General Statistics Office said on Monday.

This is the largest growth of CPI for a two-month period in the past seven years, according to the office.

Specifically, items posting most significant rises included restaurants and catering services (up 10.12 percent), medicament and health (up 3.20 percent), housing and construction materials (up 5.91 percent) and education (up 4.38 percent).

The index in February decreased 0.17 percent from January, contributed by price declines of six over the 11 items in the calculation basket. That was largely driven by lower prices of transport services, culture, entertainment and tourism, and beverage and cigarette, according to the office.

In particular, transport services saw the largest decrease of 2.5 percent in February, tailed by culture, entertainment and tourism (down 0.43 percent) and beverage and cigarette (down 0.28 percent), garment, footwear, and hat (down 0.13 percent) and housing and construction materials (down 0.03 percent).

In 2019, Vietnam's CPI rose 2.79 percent compared to 2018, the lowest level over the past three years.
