Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Tuesday, tracking sharp declines of U.S. and European shares overnight, as a global equities rout continued on concerns of the spread of COVID-19.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average tumbled 556.27 points, or 2.82 percent, from Monday to 19,142.49.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 38.12 points, or 2.74 percent, at 1,350.85.

All industry categories retreated, with mining, oil and coal product, and marine transportation-linked issues comprising those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
