Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher Wednesday, tracking solid gains on Wall Street overnight after the U.S. government's hefty stimulus plan to counter the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 305.86 points, or 1.80 percent, from Tuesday to 17,317.39.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 38.47 points, or 3.03 percent, at 1,306.93.

Insurance, electric power and gas, and chemical-related issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
