Tokyo stocks closed lower Monday as a recent rise in coronavirus infections in the capital triggered concerns that the government may impose stricter control, which could further hurt an already fragile economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 304.46 points, or 1.57 percent, from Friday to close the day at 19,084.97.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 23.95 points, or 1.64 percent, to finish at 1,435.54.

All industry categories closed in negative territory, with air transportation, bank and machinery issues comprising those that declined the most by the close of play.
