HANOI, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The consumer price index (CPI) of Vietnam, which measures changes in the prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services, rose 4.9 percent on-year between January and April, the highest growth in 2016-2020 period, the country's General Statistics Office said on Wednesday.

In the four-month period, items posting the most significant rise included restaurants and catering services (up 10.61 percent), education (up 4.52 percent), housing and construction materials (up 4.40 percent), and medicine and health services (up 3.25 percent).

Compared to March, the index decreased 1.54 percent in April, contributed by price fall of six over the 11 items in the calculation basket. That was driven by such factors as the two adjustments of petroleum and oil prices on March 29 and April 13 along with the fall in food prices, according to the office.

Specifically, transport saw the largest decline of 13.86 percent, tailed by construction materials (down 2.33 percent) and culture, entertainment and tourism (down 0.4 percent).

The CPI of Vietnam rose 2.79 percent in 2019, the lowest level over the past three years. The country has targeted a CPI growth of under 4 percent this year.
