SEOUL, May 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of information and communications technology (ICT) products fell in double digits last month due to an economic fallout from the COVID-19 outbreak, a government report showed Thursday.

The ICT export contracted 15.3 percent over the year to 12.89 billion U.S. dollars in April, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The daily average export reduced 7.6 percent in the month.

It came as the coronavirus pandemic across the world undermined global demand for ICT products.

Semiconductor shipment retreated 15.1 percent to 7.26 billion dollars last month, and mobile phone export dropped 37.2 percent to 650 million dollars.

Display panel export dived 28.1 percent to 1.24 billion dollars, but shipment for computers and peripherals kept an upward trend for seven straight months as the COVID-19 outbreak encouraged people to stay and work at home.

The ICT export to China, South Korea's biggest trading partner, diminished 16.5 percent from a year earlier to 6.61 billion dollars in April.

Shipment of the ICT products to Vietnam tumbled 34.6 percent, but those to the United States and the European Union gained 9.3 percent and 1.0 percent respectively last month.

The ICT import slipped 6.4 percent to 8.87 billion dollars, sending the trade surplus in the ICT sector to 4.02 billion dollars.
