MEXICO CITY, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Mexico reported 2,713 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, the highest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic started, bringing the total to 54,346, the country's health ministry said Tuesday.

It also reported 334 more fatalities, raising the death toll to 5,666.

Cases have started to stabilize over the past week in Mexico City and its metropolitan area, the worst hit area in the country, Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell said on Sunday.

On April 16, the Mexican government extended a nationwide lockdown until May 30 to halt the spread of the disease.

On Wednesday, the government announced it will ease restrictions in three stages starting Monday to reopen the economy.
