SEOUL, May 28 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's retail sale grew last month due to revenue expansion from online retailers, a government report showed Thursday.

Revenue of local retailers increased 3.9 in April from a year earlier, after declining 3.3 percent in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Sale by online retailers advanced 16.9 percent last month after climbing by the same margin in March.

Consumers expanded online purchase on fears of the COVID-19 outbreak. People refrained from outside activities such as shopping, traveling and eating out.

Revenue by offline retailers reduced 5.5 percent in April from a year earlier, but the falling pace slowed on the back of the government's offer of relief grants to households.

Sale by department stores diminished 14.8 percent in April, after tumbling 40.3 percent in the previous month. The revenue by discount outlets fell 1.0 percent in April after sliding 13.8 percent in March.

Demand for clothing and miscellaneous items dipped in double figures, but demand for food, household items and consumer electronics advanced last month.
