HANOI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam exported nearly 1.6 billion U.S. dollars of fruits and vegetables in the first five months of this year, posting a year-on-year decline of 10.3 percent, according to the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Wednesday.

Earlier this year, the ministry set a target to gain 5 billion U.S. dollars from selling fruits and veggies offshore in 2020.

In the five-month period, Vietnam spent 487 million U.S. dollars importing fruits and vegetables, plunging 42.1 percent against the same period last year.

Vietnam made total fruit and veggie export turnovers of 3.8 billion U.S. dollars last year, down 1.1 percent year-on-year, according to the country's General Statistics Office.
