NEW YORK -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed the 2 million mark Wednesday to reach 2,000,464 as of 11:33 p.m. local time (0333 GMT Thursday), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
Meanwhile, the national death toll from the disease rose to 112,924, according to the CSSE.

SYDNEY -- A protester who attended the weekend Black Lives Matter march in Melbourne, Australia was among eight new COVID-19 cases confirmed for the State of Victoria on Thursday.
Around 10,000 people attended the march in Melbourne, with similar demonstrations taking place in other major cities, sparking serious concern over the risk of a COVID-19 resurgence.

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry Thursday morning said that 357 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 9,996 positive cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country, taking the number of deaths to 8,102 and total cases to 286,579.
This is the largest single day spike in the country both in terms of COVID-19 deaths and new cases.

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai reported six new imported COVID-19 cases and zero increase in locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the municipal health commission said Thursday.
The imported cases included two Chinese nationals and four Pakistanis. The two Chinese nationals departed from the United States and India, and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on June 8 and 9 respectively. They showed symptoms during the isolated observation period and were confirmed as COVID-19 patients.

VIENTIANE -- Lao government announced an initial victory in the battle against COVID-19 after all 19 patients infected by the virus were discharged from hospitals and no new cases were detected for 59 consecutive days.
Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith told a media conference in Lao capital Vientiane on Wednesday that Laos has been able to gain an initial victory over the COVID-19 pandemic and it is the first significant step.

LIMA -- Peru has reported 5,087 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 208,823, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.
The death toll now stands at 5,903 people, up from 5,738 on the previous day.
