According to data from the industry body, sales at 203 outlets run by 73 operators across the country stood at 382.95 billion yen (3.5 billion U.S. dollars) on a same-store basis in June, improving from a fall of 65.6 percent in May and a record decrease of 72.8 percent in April.
In June, sales of clothing and foods fell 18.7 percent and 11.9 percent respectively, while sales of personal belongings dropped 19.0 percent and those of miscellaneous such as cosmetics and stationery products were down 28.4 percent, said the association.
Meanwhile, duty-free sales plunged 90.5 percent on a same-store basis to 2.68 billion yen (25 million U.S. dollars), as Japan continues entry restrictions to stem the spread of the virus.
The association said that as there is an upward trend in new infections especially in the capital of Tokyo, sales at major department stores in the first 16 days of this month have fallen some 25 percent from the same period last year.
