TOKYO, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Business sentiment among large Japanese companies improved in the July-September period for the first time in a year, reflecting firms' nascent recoveries from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government said in a report on Friday.

According to a joint survey by the Cabinet Office and the Finance Ministry, the confidence index reflecting sentiment at companies here capitalized at 1 billion yen (9.4 million U.S. dollars) or more, stood at plus 2.0 in the third quarter of 2020.

This is an increase from minus 47.6 booked in the April-June period, the government's data showed. The confidence index reflects the percentage of companies surveyed reporting that conditions have worsened subtracted from companies reporting improving conditions.

Sentiment among large firms looking ahead is set to improve according to the survey, with the index forecasting business conditions in the three months through December standing at 2.0, although forecast to retreat to 1.1 in the following quarter, the data showed.
