At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 71.18 U.S. cents, up from 70.53 U.S. cents on Wednesday.
"U.S. sentiment was mixed as fiscal talks continued. Bond yields rose and the U.S. dollar fell broadly. AUD/USD rose 1 percent to 71.20 U.S. cents," Westpac economists said in a morning note.
The Aussie dollar left behind a one month low, recording its first substantial gains since early October.
At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 71.16 U.S. cents.
