BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Argentina's government plans to invest 5 billion pesos (about 63.89 million U.S. dollars) over the next three years to build a Federal Digital Health Program, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The initiative "is part of the transformation of the (healthcare) system through the incorporation of information and communications tools that will allow us to provide services in a more accessible and personalized way, with higher quality and efficiency," the secretary of health equality, Martin Sabignoso, said as he issued the latest report on the country's novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended countries harness the power of digital technologies to make health coverage more accessible to all.

Argentina's program will promote the use of digital medical records, electronic prescriptions, telemedicine and greater connectivity of the entire public system of health services to make quality healthcare more universally available, the ministry said in a statement.

In addition, "the Ministry of Health will deliver 10,000 computers over the next 12 months, and offer technical assistance to all local developers and training for healthcare personnel."

Regarding the COVID-19 epidemic, the undersecretary of health strategies, Alejandro Costa, said a total of 1,090,589 people have tested positive since the start of the outbreak, and 28,896 have died from the disease, for an average fatality rate of 2.6 percent.
