MEXICO CITY, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's Economically Active Population (EAP) dwindled by 3.6 million people in the third quarter of 2020, mainly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the services sector, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) said on Tuesday.

According to the agency's National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), Mexico's EAP registered nearly 53.8 million people in the third quarter, down from more than 57.3 million people in the same period of 2019.

"In general terms, the results of the ENOE survey ... show a slow recovery in occupation, which is still below the levels prior to the pandemic," the Inegi said.

The biggest drops in employment occurred in restaurants and hotels, as well as other services.

Those employed in the informal sector numbered 27.7 million in the third quarter, 3.5 million less than in the same period of 2019.

The unemployed looking for work accounted for 5.1 percent of the EAP in the third quarter, up from 3.7 percent in the same period of 2019.

"In absolute terms, the unemployed population was 2.8 million people, an amount higher by 622,000 people compared to the third quarter of 2019," for an annual increase of 29 percent, the agency said.

On Monday, Mexico surpassed one million cases of COVID-19 with 98,861 deaths from the disease, according to official figures.
