OTTAWA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- The production of Canadian wheat, soybeans, corn, barley and oats increased in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic does not appear to have affected principal field crop production in the country, according to Statistics Canada on Thursday.

Statistics Canada attributed the increased production in 2020 to favorable weather conditions.

Harvest conditions nationwide were significantly improved compared with 2019, with favorable weather conditions helping farmers complete harvesting early in many areas.

Wheat production jumped 7.7 percent to 35.2 million tonnes and corn production rose 1.2 percent to 13.6 million tonnes in 2020, while soybean production increased 3.5 percent to 6.4 million tonnes.

Meanwhile, barley production was up 3.4 percent to 10.7 million tonnes while oat production surged 8.2 percent to 4.6 million tonnes.

However, canola production decreased 4.5 percent nationally to 18.7 million tonnes in 2020.
