The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 316.01 points, or 0.93 percent, to 34,137.31. The S&P 500 added 38.48 points, or 0.93 percent, to 4,173.42. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 163.95 points, or 1.19 percent, to 13,950.22.
Nine of the 11 primary S&P 500 ended in green, with materials and energy up 1.87 percent and 1.48 percent, respectively, leading the gainers. Utilities and communication services, however, struggled.
Shares of Netflix tumbled more than 7 percent after the U.S. streaming service giant reported first-quarter subscriber growth that came in sharply below Wall Street's expectations. The company's guidance for user additions in the second quarter was also weak against market estimates.
U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded mostly higher with seven of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on an upbeat note.
U.S. equities suffered two straight sessions of losses on Monday and Tuesday, as COVID-19 worries persisted.
