OTTAWA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Canada aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 45 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday.

Trudeau announced the ambitious goal at a virtual summit on climate change of world leaders, saying that Canada is on track to exceed the target of a 30-percent reduction it agreed to under the Paris Agreement.

With the new commitment, Canada predicted its emissions will drop to at least 439 megatons by the end of this decade. The country emitted 730 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2019, showed official data.

Trudeau said that Canada is on its way to net-zero emissions by 2050, as his government is investing in public transportation, clean energy, greener homes and decarbonizing the steel, cement and aluminum industries.

Canada is also working on banning harmful single-use plastics and planting 2 billion trees, he said.

Trudeau said it may be tough for Canada, a major energy producer, to attain a deep cut in emissions, but all countries must rise to the challenge.
