SEOUL, June 3 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sale rose in May amid the continued demand for German luxury models, industry data showed Thursday.

The number of registered imported vehicles was 24,080 in May, up 3.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

From a month earlier, the number reduced 5.9 percent last month due to the supply shortage of some brands, but it increased in single digits on a yearly basis thanks to solid demand for German models.

German automaker Mercedes-Benz ranked first in terms of automotive sale here by selling 7,690 vehicles in May.

It was followed by German carmaker BMW with the sale of 6,257 units, Volkswagen with 1,358 units and Volvo with 1,264 units respectively.

The number of European models sold here was 19,249, or 79.9 percent of the total. It was followed by U.S. brands with a market share of 11.6 percent and Japanese models with 8.5 percent each.

For the first five months of this year, a total of 121,566 imported cars were sold here. It was up 20.5 percent from the same period of last year.
