NEW YORK, June 21 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks surged on Monday, buoyed by overall strength in the energy sector.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 586.89 points, or 1.76 percent, to 33,876.97. The S&P 500 rose 58.34 points, or 1.40 percent, to 4,224.79. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 111.10 points, or 0.79 percent, to 14,141.48.

All the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy up 4.29 percent, leading the gains.

U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded roughly flat with five of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on an upbeat note.

The above market reactions followed a downbeat week on Wall Street as investors assessed the Federal Reserve's policy stance, while digesting the latest economic data.

For the week ending Friday, the Dow slid 3.5 percent, the S&P 500 decreased 1.9 percent and the Nasdaq lost 0.3 percent.
