NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks finished higher on Tuesday, buoyed by overall strength in the energy sector.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 278.24 points, or 0.80 percent, to 35,116.40. The S&P 500 increased 35.99 points, or 0.82 percent, to 4,423.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 80.23 points, or 0.55 percent, to 14,761.29.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy up 1.83 percent, outpacing the rest. Communication services slipped 0.19 percent, the lone declining group.

U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded lower with all the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on a downbeat note.

Investors were assessing the impact of a resurgence of COVID-19 infections.

The average daily increase of cases in the United States was over 84,000 in the seven-day period ending Monday, compared with a seven-day average of around 14,300 daily cases a month ago, according to the latest data compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The country registered over 100,000 daily COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest record since early February this year.

On Monday, U.S. stocks gave up earlier gains to finish mixed after data showed the nation's manufacturing sector saw slower growth in July.
