SYDNEY, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Australia Post, the country's national postal service, recorded 100.7 million Australian dollars (about 73 million U.S. dollars) of profits in the 2020-21 financial year, a nearly doubling number driven by the explosive growth of e-commerce amid COVID-19 lockdowns.

The profits, unveiled by Australia Post on Tuesday, marked an 87.7-percent increase from the financial year prior, which recorded 53.6 million Australian dollars (about 39 million U.S. dollars) of profits.

Profits were carried largely by parcel revenue growth, which saw a 17.7-percent increase to 6.48 billion Australian dollars (about 4.7 billion U.S. dollars).

"The strength of eCommerce -- up 31.8 percent as Australians took to online shopping in record numbers -- has supported the result, as did the temporary regulatory changes which allowed us to meet the significant parcel demand and ongoing mail delivery," said Australia Post's Acting CEO Rodney Boys.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Australia Post has established 18 new parcel processing facilities, chartered additional freighter flights and employed hundreds of temporary staff to meet the increasing demand.

Further to this in April of 2020, the Australian government announced temporary regulatory relief to the postal service, which included flexible delivery schedules and an alternate day delivery model for metropolitan areas.

Boys said the growth highlighted the crucial role Australia Post has played during the pandemic and the hard work of all of its employees.

"This strong result rests with the hard work of our people, who have continued to deliver every day through the challenges of a pandemic and numerous lockdowns," said Boys.

Boys announced that the postal service would recognize this by delivering 3-percent annual rise for the next three years to over 31,000 of its employees.
