The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 90.73 points, or 0.26 percent, to 34,390.72. The S&P 500 increased 6.83 points, or 0.16 percent, to 4,359.46. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 34.24 points, or 0.24 percent, to 14,512.44.
Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with utilities up 1.3 percent, outpacing the rest. Tech stocks came under pressure with the communication services and the technology groups down 0.21 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.
U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded mostly lower with seven of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on a downbeat note.
The above market reactions followed a big rout on Wall Street that saw the Dow close down nearly 570 points, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq shed 2 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. A spike in U.S. bond yields hit rate-sensitive tech stocks on Tuesday, dragging the broad market lower.
