SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's retail sale grew in September as online demand remained solid amid the continued COVID-19 resurgence, a government report said Thursday.

Revenue by online and offline retailers gained 8.2 percent in September from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Revenue by online retailers surged 14.5 percent last month as the COVID-19 resurgence encouraged people to buy food and other daily supplies in the cyberspace.

The country's daily number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has hovered above 1,000 since July 7.

The government maintained its toughest social-distancing rules in the Seoul metropolitan area, roiling the consumer spending in offline stores.

Revenue by offline retailers rose 3.3 percent in September from a year earlier.

Sale by department stores jumped 24.3 percent on strong demand for luxury items, but revenue by discount outlets declined 13.3 percent last month.

Revenue by convenient stores increased 9 percent on higher demand for liquor and daily necessities.
