The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 158.71 points, or 0.44 percent, to 35,921.23. The S&P 500 increased 2.56 points, or 0.06 percent, to 4,649.27. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 81.58 points, or 0.52 percent, to 15,704.28.
Six of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with materials and technology up 0.85 percent and 0.53 percent, respectively, leading the gainers. Utilities slipped 0.6 percent, the worst-performing group.
U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded mostly higher with nine of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on an upbeat note.
The above moves came after a major setback on Wall Street. U.S. equities closed noticeably lower on Wednesday with the Nasdaq shedding 1.66 percent, after data showed a key U.S. inflation reading surged to the highest level in three decades.
