Aashim Mongia, Managing Director of India-based West Coast Marine Yacht Services which manages the MY Kalizma said in a statement that, "Opening of Port City Marina, will attract superyachts that visit the region and hopefully we will see more superyachts coming into the Indian Ocean Region for nautical tourism."
"With the successful first visit we are hoping to bring more yachts to Sri Lanka to explore the untapped potential that the island nation has to offer," he said.
Head of Public Relations at Port City Colombo, Kassapa Senarath, told Xinhua that the Port City Marina aims to attract luxury and superyachts as well as international regattas and luxury boat shows.
"The 15 hectares allocated for this precinct comprises prime real estate for hospitality, retail, and entertainment features as well as luxury residences and amenities such as a yacht club. The marina has the capacity to berth approximately 200 to 220 luxury yachts," he said.
The MY Kalizma, formerly owned by film stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, became the first superyacht to berth at the Port City Marina on Sunday.
Port City Colombo is part of the Belt and Road Initiative and consists of 269 hectares of land reclaimed from the ocean which will function as a luxury city and services-oriented Special Economic Zone.
