ISTANBUL, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Turkey's stock exchange Borsa Istanbul announced on Monday that 52 companies launched an initial public offering (IPO) in 2021, marking an all-time record despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Korkmaz Ergun, CEO of Borsa Istanbul, said in a statement that the total value of the IPOs was 21.6 billion Turkish liras (about 1.6 billion U.S. dollars).

The previous record was registered with 35 companies in 1990, said the statement, adding that the figure dropped to eight in 2020 when the pandemic hit the country.

Borsa Istanbul ranked the 13th on the world's stock exchanges list in 2021 in terms of the number of IPOs, a rise from the 27th in 2020, it added.

The number of investors, index values, and trading volumes reached an all-time high in 2021, according to Ergun, noting that all services were provided by Borsa Istanbul uninterruptedly despite the lingering impact of the pandemic.

He stressed that at the end of 2021, the net profit of the stock exchange increased by 44 percent to 2.07 billion liras.
