HANOI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded a year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 5.03 percent in the first quarter of 2022, the General Statistics Office said on Tuesday.

The sector of agriculture, forestry and fishery grew by 2.45 percent against the same period last year, while industry and construction grew 6.38 percent, and services up 4.58 percent, said the office.

Vietnam posted a modest GDP growth of 2.58 percent in 2021 amid the severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. A growth target of between 6 and 6.5 percent was previously set by the country's top legislature for this year.

In a report released in January, the World Bank forecast that Vietnam's economy would expand by 5.5 percent in 2022 given that the COVID-19 pandemic would be brought under control at home and abroad.
