LJUBLJANA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The Slovenian government on Tuesday set a maximum level for retail and wholesale gasoline prices in order to curb excessive price hikes, just days after these prices were released.

The maximum retail prices are set at 1.56 euros per liter of 95-octane gasoline, and at 1.668 euros per liter of diesel, and will be valid until Aug. 10.

"The government of Slovenia limited the prices again because of expected disturbances on the gasoline market and large price oscillations," the government said.

It had first limited gasoline prices from the middle of March until the end of April, but prices jumped immediately after being released on May 1. By Tuesday, the price of a liter of diesel had jumped to about 1.86 euros per liter, from 1.541 at the end of April when the price was still limited.

Due to high global energy prices, Slovenia's annual consumer price inflation reached 6.9 percent in February, the highest level since July 2008. Inflation persisted at 6.9 percent in April, but the government hopes it will ease once global energy prices stabilize.
