Malaysia's inflation rises 2.3 pct in April on higher food prices

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's inflation, as measured by Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose 2.3 percent in April from a year ago on higher food prices, official data showed on Wednesday.

The increase in food inflation, which contributed the highest to the overall weight of CPI, remains a major contributor to inflation, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement.

The food inflation in April was higher at 4.1 percent with 89.1 percent of food items in the food and beverages group recording increases.

This was followed by restaurants and hotels which grew 3.2 percent and transport which increased by 3 percent.

On a monthly basis, the CPI increased 0.2 percent as compared to March.

Core inflation measures changes in the prices of all goods and services excluding volatile items of fresh food as well as administered prices of goods by the government, registered an increase of 2.1 percent in April as compared to the same month of the previous year.
