NEW YORK, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks fell on Monday, giving up some of the gains they had scored in the prior week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 46.73 points, or 0.14 percent, to 32,798.40. The S&P 500 fell 11.66 points, or 0.28 percent, to 4,118.63. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 21.71 points, or 0.18 percent, to 12,368.98.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with energy and financials down 2.18 percent and 0.89 percent, respectively, leading the laggards. Consumer staples rose 1.21 percent, the best-performing group.

On the economic front, the Institute for Supply Management said Monday that its closely-watched gauge of U.S. manufacturing activity declined to 52.8 percent in July from 53 percent a month earlier. While a reading above 50 percent indicates expansion, the latest print was the lowest since June 2020.

Investors are also awaiting the July jobs report slated for release on Friday.

Last week, the Dow rose 3 percent, while the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 4.3 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively.
