TOKYO, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Household spending in Japan increased for the first time in four months in June, the government said in a report on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, household spending in the reporting period increased a real 3.5 percent from a year earlier.

Spending by households with two or more people stood at an average of 276,885 yen (2,070 U.S. dollars) in June, the statistics bureau said.

Accounting for more than half of Japan's gross domestic product, household spending is a key gauge of private consumption.
