NAIROBI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's mobile money transactions surged 17 percent in the first half of the year to hit a record 3.84 trillion shillings (32.1 billion U.S. dollars), the central bank said on Wednesday.

This was an increase from 27.4 billion U.S. dollars in a similar period in 2021, with the surge boosted by the increased entrenchment of the service into the financial system, according to the bank.

Some 304,693 people were employed as agents in the sector, underscoring the importance of the service in job creation, said the central bank. Similarly, the number of subscribers hit a record 70 million.
