NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar weakened in late trading on Tuesday as the euro gained a momentum.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, decreased 0.06 percent to 108.7730.

The euro, the largest component of the index, rose as traders bet on a big rate hike from the European Central Bank after policymakers' recent hawkish messages.

In late New York trading, the euro was up to 1.0024 U.S. dollars from 0.9994 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound was down to 1.1658 U.S. dollars from 1.1703 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar fell to 0.6857 U.S. dollars from 0.6902 U.S. dollars.

The U.S. dollar bought 138.67 Japanese yen, lower than 138.82 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar rose to 0.9736 Swiss francs from 0.9688 Swiss francs, and it increased to 1.3101 Canadian dollars from 1.3006 Canadian dollars.
