SOFIA, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria is willing to increase its energy exports and provide gas storage services to North Macedonia, Bulgarian caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev said on Monday.

The agreement reached today will stay in place until March 31, 2023, he said.

Donev's comments came after his meeting with North Macedonian Prime Minister Dimitar Kovachevski, who is paying a one-day visit to Bulgaria.

"Bulgaria has traditionally been and still is an energy leader in the region," he said.

Bulgaria has been an energy exporter, thanks partly to electricity produced by its nuclear power plant.

The bilateral meeting had been initiated by North Macedonia as the country needs more energy for its growing economy, industry, and households.

A joint working group will begin work on Wednesday to prepare the respective contract, Donev said.

North Macedonia is also interested in booking certain volumes in Bulgaria's gas storage facility in Chiren for the storage of North Macedonian natural gas, Donev said.

This will involve building additional pipeline capacities to link up the transmission network of the two countries, he added.

Kovachevski said he was seeking solutions for increasing electricity supplies to North Macedonia in the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2023, under optimal conditions.
